The process begins with hot water from an industrial application, such as cooling water from machinery, entering the cooling tower. This hot water carries excess heat that needs to be dissipated.
The hot water is distributed within the cooling tower using a distribution system. This system evenly spreads the water over the cooling tower fill media.
The heart of the cooling tower, the fill media, is a critical component. It is designed to provide a large surface area for the water to spread out and be exposed to the air. The design of the fill media ensures maximum contact between the hot water and the surrounding air.
As the hot water trickles down through the fill media, a powerful fan at the top of the cooling tower draws in large volumes of ambient air. This air flows through the fill media in a counterflow pattern.
Some of the water in the cooling tower will evaporate due to the exposure to the warm air and the natural process of heat exchange. This evaporation further contributes to the cooling effect and helps reduce the water temperature.
Cooled water, now at a lower temperature, exits the cooling tower and is returned to the industrial process to continue its cooling function. The excess heat has been successfully removed.
